On the day

The Royal Monastery of El Escorial is the largest Renaissance building in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. Built by Philip II between 1563 and 1584 in the granite foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama 40 km northwest of Madrid, it combined monastery, royal palace, royal pantheon and library under a single roof.

Frequently asked

Do under-5s need a ticket?
No. Children under 5 enter free at the gate, accompanied by a paying adult. No separate ticket is needed.

Passport, national ID card, or any government-issued photo ID showing date of birth. Operator staff at the gate verify age before admission at the reduced rate.
Is photography allowed?
Yes in the courtyards, the gardens, the Library corridor (no flash) and the Royal Palaces. Photography is prohibited in the Basilica, the Royal Pantheon, the Pantheon of Princes, and the painting collections of the Chapter Houses.

Smart-casual is fine. The Basilica is an active Catholic church — shoulders and knees covered are expected. Comfortable shoes for the long stone corridors.
